NESL MANWAY CANNON
The latest addition to our range of Tank Cleaning Equipment
|
|
Zero man entry for tank cleaning operations is rapidly becoming standard practice in all European and many other Countries. NESL have developed the Manway Cannon system for zero entry cleaning operations. The latest generation Manway Cannons have increased capabilities and facilities. The systems are ATEX certified and are supplied with gas and oxygen detection and jetting supply pumps. Now also available for North America built to comply with US regulations UL508 and NEC The Cannons are constructed from Stainless Steel and are protected against oil and chemical attack.

The Complete cannon system is installed in a specially modified standard ISO 20Ft shipping container. The container is fully certified by Lloyds Container Services for shipping by sea. The container is separated into 3 compartments. The control room is fully lined and insulated and comes with heating and air conditioning for operator comfort. The centre compartment houses the hydraulic power pack, umbilical and reel and also the manway cannons. The third compartment is a fully acoustic lined generator room. As well as the generator there is also space for the centrifugal pump to be stored for shipping and transportation.
Operator comfort and an office like work area was not one of our first considerations when designing the system, but with customer feedback indicating that refinery senior management are arriving at every site to see the cannon, it was deemed the way forward |
The incorporation of the Xenon spotlight into the cannon system has resulted not only in more efficient and cost effective cleaning times, but more & more refineries and tank farms are now employing the services of the cannon for internal visual inspections of tanks for damage and content clarification.

Viton sleeving protects hoses and cables from damage. Viton seals protect electrical equipment from chemical attack |
The range of movement on the cannons, as shown in the pictures, allows cleaning operations to be carried out not only at great distance but also close to the manway. With the ability to point in the air, tank roof washing at the initial stages of operation saves time later in the process. |

The centrifugal pump is a stand alone unit which is located close to the tank for operation. It is fully certified for use in a zone 1 environment. It has the capability to be hooked up to 2 cannons at the same time, although operation of 2 cannons together is not normally advised. Both local and remote operation of the pump is possible
|
The control room has a checker plate stainless steel floor, is fully insulated and panel lined and comes complete with heating and air-conditioning system and lighting. The operator console is designed for maximum ease of use. The cannon is controlled manually via joystick’s for movement and switches for functions or automatically via the integrated touch screen, real time cannon graphical indication display. All operations can be recorder direct to HDD DVD recorders and the tank is constantly monitored via a gas detection system which will shut the system down should set levels of LEL be reached. The computer is protected by a UPS in case of power failure
|
Umbilical storage is made easy using the twin stacking hydraulically driven reels. By means of a simple switch operation the reel will either rotate clockwise or counter clockwise. The units are available without the hydraulic drive but due to the weight of the laden reels we advise against this. Operators are protected from the chain drives by a stainless steel guard complete with E-stop in the case of emergency

Real time graphical simulation of the cannon allows the operator not only to have the ability to clean with a fully automated system, but also allows for the continuation of cleaning operations if the tank incurs a temperature inversion and “the mist” appears. Insertion and removal of the cannon from the tank must be done with the cannon pointing straight ahead. The computer generated image allows the operator to remove the cannon from the tank safe in the knowledge that the unit is ready for de-mobilisation |
